Aunque las fuentes documentales romanas no ofrecen muchos detalles sobre los orígenes de Espartaco, sí resaltan su crueldad. La excepción fue Plutarco, quien le otorgó cierta dignidad (lo presentó como un noble tracio helenizado) en contraposición a Craso, a quien el historiador griego detestaba profundamente.

El actor galés Andy Whitfield, estrella de la serie de televisión 'Spartacus: Sangre y arena', murió en septiembre de 2011 a causa de un linfoma no-Hodgkin, un tipo de cáncer contra el que estuvo luchando durante 18 meses.
